Some of the software resulting from research activities has been released as free and/or open source software:

  • Industrial Software:
    • Massive point cloud library (Linux/Win32/iOS, 2011-present): geometry processing, streaming, and rendering library for massive point clouds. Commercialized by Gexcel. Also used in-house as component of larger system for processing, acquisition, and rendering of 3D scan data.
    • SAR3D/RER3D framework (Linux/Win32/iOS, 2006-present): interactive multilayer internet geoviewing system. Used by regional governments (Sardinia, Emilia Romagna) for presenting geographical information.
    • Cataract Surgery Simulator (Linux/Win32, 2006-2008): Real-time virtual reality simulator of cataract surgery. Used for surgical training courses, DIES group.
    • MIGAVIS (SGI IRIX, 1997-2000): Interactive scientific visualization system for Discontinuous Finite Element Visualization (SGI/IRIX). Used at ENEL for analyzing CFD simulations.
  • Open Source Software: Many of our contributions have led to software relased in open source, including: marlie: web-based multi-layered exploration of annotated image-based shape and material models (2020-); spaceland: C++ class library for geometric computation with data types specifically tuned for OpenGL (2009-). ratman: software framework for terrain streaming and rendering (2009-); brain:software for 3D reconstruction and visualization of architectonic, neurophysiological and tract tracing data of primate cerebral cortex used in a number of research works in neurophysiology (2009-); i3d: first freeware VRML browser, used at CERN in the LHC project (1995-1998).
