Challenge
The tourism industry shows increasing attention and sensitivity to travellers with accessibility needs. The tourist destinations able to offer an adequate portfolio of accessible services will have a competitive edge. Actually most of the information in airports is conveyed by means (audio, video) intended for the not disabled people, this limits their use by people with disabilities making their travel experience more difficult.
Overview
The Airport4All system intends to promote a number of activities to make Sardinia the preferred destination of accessible tourism starting with making flight information available at the 3 main regional airports for all stages of a flight experience from arrival at the airport to baggage claim.
The app aims at ensuring the accessibility of flights information at Sardinian airports to all travelers, whether they are not disabled, or hearing impaired / deaf or color-blind, thanks to real-time updates and ad-hoc messages on their smartphone.
Currently, the app provides information about: take off and landing hours; check in opening; check in desk; boarding start and stop; gate number; baggage claim number. This kind of information at the airport are diffused only through loud announcements from speakers or visual monitors for an audience with no disabilities.
Through the app a traveler can register her/his flight and receive notifications either for the specific flight or general ones. The type of notifications varies according to the use of different vibrations (e.g. long vibration for take off time).
Involved airports and managing companies are:
- Cagliari Elmas (SOGAER)
- Olbia Costa Smeralda (GEASAR)
- Alghero Fertilia (SOGEAAL)
In the future new information will be included in the app and further disabled people will be supported.
Airport4All is designed to contribute to open data for transports and travellers with disabilities and is developed in accordance with the Directive 2010/40/EU on the framework for the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems and with the Regulation (EC) No 1107/2006 concerning the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility when travelling by air.
