SOIL health monitoring and information systems FOR sustainable soil management in the MEDiterranean region

SOILS4MED shares the vision that in the Mediterranean region (MR) there is urgent need to enhance availability and use of soil data and information (SDI) and to harmonize methods towards standardized soil information systems (SIS), as enabling conditions to protect and improve soil health and support policies to achieve land degradation neutrality (LDN) and other SDGs (food security, CC, biodiversity, economic development).
SOILS4MED has the following objectives:

  •  engage with stakeholders in line with the Living Lab approach and raise awareness on benefits deriving from increased investment in SDI;
  • develop policy relevant integrated indicator sets and monitoring protocols adapted to the environment specificities and needs of the MR;
  • validate the protocols in study areas representing major agro-ecological regions and soil types, generating the first region-wide harmonized soil health dataset;
  • demonstrate the capacity of the produced SDI, integrated by legacy soil data, to feed state-of-the-art tools to support sustainable land management and to enhance soil mapping including carbon stock mapping;
  • implement standardized country-based SIS for effective management and use of SDI.
  • SOILS4MED works in synergy with initiatives on SDI harmonization and use in the MR, particularly supporting efforts by FAO’s Global Soil Partnership and JRC.
