PROJECT INFO
The RIALE-EU project, within which this platform was developed, arises from the need to show students the stages of an experimental process so they can efficiently develop an appreciation for the complexity of experimentation. By making the experience alive through synchronous remote access, students can follow the actions of researchers, engage in communication with them to ask questions, and confirm hypotheses on the topic. Especially now that distance learning strategies are a regular practice in the educational world, the RIALE-EU project, with its platform, integrates the experimental process accessible to users: compulsory school students, university students, or professionals.
RIALE-EU is both a methodology and an educational platform that allows teachers and students synchronous and asynchronous remote access to experimental activities in technical-scientific laboratories of universities, research institutions, and schools. The main purpose of RIALE-EU is to offer schools in Sardinia an innovative educational environment aimed at the development of technical-scientific knowledge.
Project Objectives
- Create a fruitful interaction between secondary school teachers and students and researchers from research centers and universities
- Allow secondary school students to better understand the world of scientific research in cases where direct exposure is not possible
- Provide each student with a tool that adapts to their learning style, thanks to content available at any time on the interactive timeline
- Provide school teachers with a tool to monitor the learning progress of each student
- Offer classes the opportunity to make observations using the scientific method through the acquisition and analysis of data collected in research laboratories
STAKEHOLDERS INVOLVED
- Schools: while RIALE targeted all secondary schools in Sardinia, RIALE-EU is aimed at all schools in Italy and Europe as users of content and users of the educational platform
- Technical-scientific laboratories of universities, research centers, and schools, which provide their experiments

HOW CAN A NEW lABORATORY JOIN?
Heads of scientific laboratories of universities, research centres and schools who intend wish to make their experiments available are invited to send an email to the project secretariat: riale@crs4.it.
Please note that participation is free of charge, and that CRS4 will provide the necessary hardware for audio/video connections.
HOW DO I REGISTER MY CLASS?
School Heads and teachers of Secondary schools (junior high and high schools) who are interested to register one or more classes to the live sessions with the hosting laboratories must register on the RIALE EU Platform and contact the project secretariat: riale@crs4.it
HOW DO YOU PARTICIPATE IN LAB EXPERIMENTS?
The platform can be used in two different ways:
- Live (or synchronous) session – live remote connection with the hosting scientific or technical laboratory.
Synchronous sessions last about one hour. During these sessions teachers and students are connected live to the hosting laboratory when the experience is carried out by the researchers or laboratory technicians. Remote participation is made possible by video cameras and sensors/actuators installed within the laboratories. - On demand (asynchronous sessions) – is the use of educational contents on an interactive timeline.
Thanks to the editing tools provided by the platform, teachers can personalise the timeline of the video recording of the experiment by adding additional educational contents that can be videos, links, documents, tests, etc.

The RIALE-EU project, funded until 2025, by the Development and Cohesion Plan of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, is a direct evolution of the RIALE and IDEA projects, funded respectively by Sardegna Ricerche with resources pursuant to art. 9 letter c) of Regional Law 20/2015, and by the Cohesion Action Plan (PAC) of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia. The project is proposed and carried out by a working group from the Higher Studies and Computational Modeling and Content Technologies sector of CRS4.
