The IHE Connectathon, one of the leading international events dedicated to interoperability in healthcare information systems, took place in Brussels from March 23 to 27, 2026.
In a context where healthcare is increasingly supported by technology and information systems for collecting and analyzing data generated along the care pathway, the ability to integrate this data correctly and effectively is essential to support more accurate clinical decisions.
The Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) consortium brings together international experts from the clinical, academic, and industrial sectors to define guidelines for the correct application of the many standards related to clinical information. Its activities combine theoretical work with practical validation through events such as the Connectathon—true “integration marathons” where companies and organizations test the interoperability of their systems according to IHE profiles.
Researchers from the Visual and Data-intensive Computing (ViDiC) sector at CRS4 have been participating in these events since 2013 as evaluators (Monitors), verifying the effective compliance of systems with IHE integration profiles. Also in the 2026 edition, Alessandro Sulis contributed to the event’s activities, taking part in the work carried out throughout the week.
In addition to coordinating the technical committee of the anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine domain for the development of guidelines, Alessandro Sulis is among the Connectathon Monitors. In this edition, he made a significant contribution to the first on-site validation of integration profiles for Digital Pathology, aimed at integrating high-resolution images derived from the scanning of diagnostic slides into clinical workflows.
The coordination and development of the guidelines are carried out within the XDATA project (Contribution under Article 9, Regional Law 20/2015, Autonomous Region of Sardinia, Institutional Project).
