Who we are

What is CRS4

CRS4 – the Center for Advanced Studies, Research and Development in Sardinia – is an interdisciplinary research center founded in 1990 by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia. Its sole shareholder is the regional agency Sardegna Ricerche. The Center applies advanced scientific methods to study, research, develop, and test solutions for addressing complex problems in areas with high social, economic, and environmental impact.

Its main scientific and technological competencies include high-performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence, visual computing, and more recently, quantum computing. These activities are applied to strategic sectors such as personalized medicine, bioinformatics, telemedicine, energy transition, precision agriculture, cultural heritage valorization, smart land development, and cybersecurity.

CRS4 is based in Pula and Cagliari, employs 130 people, and has an annual budget of approximately 12 million euros, funded 50% by the Region and the remainder through regional, national, and international resources obtained via competitive calls and service contracts.

What we do

CRS4’s mission is to contribute to the economic and cultural development of Sardinia by supporting the growth of a knowledge- and technology-intensive ecosystem of businesses and activities.

The Center carries out scientific research and technological development projects, both independently and in collaboration with universities, public institutions, companies, and regional authorities. Its activities also include advanced training, knowledge and technology transfer, and the testing of applied solutions in real-world contexts.

CRS4 participates in regional, national, and international research programs, promotes the integration of basic and applied research, and contributes to the modernization of the region’s scientific and technological infrastructures. In doing so, it plays a strategic role in the research and innovation system, helping to disseminate scientific results and foster advanced skills within the regional production system.
