Remembering Gianluigi ‘Zag’ Zanetti

Gianluigi Zanetti, known to everyone as Zag, was for three decades one of the most brilliant and respected figures at CRS4.

A physicist by training, he graduated with honors from the University of Bologna and earned a PhD in Physics from the University of Chicago. He carried out research and teaching activities at leading scientific institutions such as Princeton University and the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

From the foundation of CRS4 he brought his expertise and vision to the Center, shaping over time a path that began with early applications of e-health and surgical simulation, moved on to the design of distributed computing infrastructures and HPC for bioinformatics, and led to the development of data-intensive platforms for clinical data (openEHR, FAIR) as well as large-scale urban applications for the analysis of massive datasets.

A rich and multifaceted path of interests

Alongside his contributions in scientific computing, Zag also played a decisive role in the development of some of the very first Web applications and in spreading digital culture. From one of his ideas came the first webmail application in the world, developed in 1995 by the young researcher Luca Manunza, his student and collaborator at CRS4. That experiment opened the way to a completely new way of conceiving email, accessible directly from a browser.

Together with physicist and teacher Roberto De Leo, he also promoted activities with students at the Liceo Scientifico Alberti in Cagliari which, in 1994, led to the birth of the first Italian school on the Internet – and one of the first in Europe – with a web server managed directly by the students themselves.

At the same time, his scientific work developed across different and complementary fields:

  • High-Performance & Data-Intensive Computing for scalable processing in bioinformatics and life sciences.

  • Management and analysis of biomedical data, with platforms such as PyEHR and solutions attentive to traceability and privacy.

  • Digital medicine and imaging, with pioneering big data applications in radiology and clinical contexts.

  • Medical simulation and virtual reality, including the development of advanced surgical simulators.

  • E-health and scientific web applications, among the earliest Italian initiatives for electronic medical records via the Internet.

This combination of experiences demonstrates an extraordinary breadth of knowledge and interests, which made Zag a unique point of reference at CRS4 and, more broadly, in the scientific community.

The memory of those who knew him

Colleagues and collaborators still recall his ability to combine scientific rigor, intellectual curiosity, and genuine attention to people. The many demonstrations of esteem and affection received over the years bear witness to the deep mark he left. His loss created a great human and scientific void, but his example remains a living part of the history and identity of CRS4.

As a tribute to his legacy, CRS4 dedicated its main conference hall at the Pula headquarters to Gianluigi Zanetti, turning it into a symbolic place that reflects his way of understanding science: a space for meeting, discussion, and above all the sharing of knowledge, a value that was always fundamental for Zag.

ZagDay – A day dedicated to Zag, 13 September 2021

The memory of Gianluigi Zanetti does not belong only to the past: it is an integral part of the present and the future of CRS4. His passion for research, his tireless curiosity, and his ability to share knowledge remain a daily reference point for those who work at the Center today. His ideas, the projects he helped to create, and the human legacy he left behind constitute a living heritage that inspires new generations of researchers. Preserving and enhancing this legacy means not only remembering Zag, but also continuing his path, carrying forward with the same energy and openness the scientific and cultural mission of CRS4.
