Cagliari Digital Lab (CTE DLab) has received the SMAU Innovation Award 2025 for a project that brings quantum computing into urban public transportation, developed in collaboration with CRS4 and Abinsula.
The award was presented on November 6 during SMAU Milan, a leading Italian event dedicated to innovation for businesses, startups, and public organizations. Now in its nineteenth edition, the award recognizes entities that excel in experimenting with and investing in cutting-edge technological solutions.
The winning project involves the development of an IoT gateway to be installed on public transport vehicles, designed to enable advanced predictive maintenance and data protection through quantum technologies. The integration of quantum communication systems ensures very high levels of data transmission security, anticipating the challenges of future smart mobility.
CRS4 contributes to the project by developing quantum computing-based components, with a particular focus on communication security and distributed data processing. The initiative is a concrete example of the Center’s commitment to transferring emerging technologies into real-world applications with significant social and industrial impact.
Representing CRS4 at the award ceremony were Lidia Leoni, Director of the Quantum and High-Performance Computing, Biosciences and Advanced Studies sector, and Giuliana Siddi Moreau, Head of the Quantum Technologies Laboratory within the Cagliari Digital Lab project.
The project is part of the broader activities of Cagliari Digital Lab, led by the Municipality of Cagliari, in partnership with CRS4, the University of Cagliari, Abinsula, WindTre, Cyber 4.0, WiData, and Greeshare, with the goal of accelerating the adoption of emerging technologies across the region.
