The next-generation infrastructure for gravitational wave detection: project status and technological challenges
Tuesday, October 21, 2025 — 2:30 p.m. — Auditorium of Sardegna Ricerche

Domenico D’Urso, Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Sassari, is the National Coordinator of the Einstein Telescope Italy scientific community and Co-Chair of the Site Characterization Board of the international Einstein Telescope Collaboration.

During the meeting, he will present the talk entitled:
“Einstein Telescope, the next generation infrastructure for Gravitational Waves detection: Status of the project and technological challenges.”

Abstract of the seminar:

The detection of gravitational waves has opened a new window onto the Universe.
The joint observation of gravitational waves and electromagnetic signals from astrophysical phenomena, first achieved in 2017, marked the beginning of multi-messenger astronomy. While the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaborations continue to make new detections, a new generation of gravitational wave observatories is being developed, set to operate in the coming decades and enabling the exploration of almost the entire Universe.

The Einstein Telescope (ET) is Europe’s next-generation project for gravitational wave detection. With an order-of-magnitude improvement in sensitivity, ET will allow scientists to probe the depths of the cosmos, paving the way for major advances in astrophysics, cosmology, and fundamental physics.

The presentation will provide an overview of the project, the main technological challenges, and the expected impact on the future of gravitational wave astronomy.
