IDEM is the Italian federation for identity management used by academic and research Institutions.

Through IDEM users can use online services and access resources shared by organizations.

IDEM is based on Shibboleth, a widely used secure framework for Single Sign-On (SSO), using Security Assertion Markup Languages (SAML). In this context, users can be authenticated by their own organization and recognized by other institutions belonging to IDEM.

According to this mechanism, users can also access external resources shared by other entities. For security purposes, only a minimal amount of public information is sent over the network, with the appropriate level of security and privacy.

Each organization can join the IDEM Federation as:

• Identity Provider (authentication for users)
• Service Provider (SSO applied to the usage of resources shared by institutions)

CRS4 is an Identity Provider (IdP) within the IDEM Federation
