The final results presentation of the European project ARSINOE (Climate Resilient Regions through Systemic Solutions and Innovations) opens today, 23 September 2025, in Brussels, at the Permanent Representation of Greece to the European Union, and continues tomorrow.
The ARSINOE project includes 42 partners from 15 European countries, coordinated by the University of Thessaly (Greece), and has been funded by the European Union’s research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 (Grant Agreement No. 101037424).
ARSINOE aimed to develop innovative solutions to address the impacts of climate change, combining scientific research, technologies, and the active participation of citizens and institutions. These solutions were tested across nine case studies in different European regions — including the durum wheat case in Sardinia, which involved CRS4 — with the goal of making them applicable in other contexts as well.
CRS4 is taking part with Marino Marrocu and Luca Massidda, researchers in the Visual and Data-Intensive Computing sector, who are presenting the contribution to the Mediterranean case study on durum wheat. The work focuses on adaptation strategies to climate change for a key crop in the Mediterranean area, and in Sardinia in particular, bringing together economic, environmental, and cultural aspects.
The programme includes sessions that report on the project’s experience with digital innovations, serious games (educational and simulation games), and citizen science activities, designed to directly engage communities and stakeholders. Presentations also focus on the lessons learned, the project’s scientific and methodological legacy, and perspectives for future sustainability.
In parallel with the event, the documentary “Grains of Change”, filmed in Sardinia and dedicated to the durum wheat case study, is also being presented. The film uses images and testimonies to illustrate the challenges faced and the strategies developed to make agriculture more resilient to the effects of climate change.
ARSINOE marks the culmination of a three-year collaboration among research centres, universities, institutions, and companies. The Brussels meeting is not only a moment of synthesis, but also an opportunity to reflect on how to capitalise on the results to address climate challenges in the coming years.
