In just a few decades, exploration geophysics has enormously enhanced the capacity to identify and exploit natural resources. The introduction of surveying techniques and high resolution numerical reconstruction have enabled prospectors to see through the earth and develop a clearer understanding of the structure and history of resource deposits, going well beyond empirical good sense. Such developments in prospecting technology have led to an explosive growth in the field of imaging science. The immediate consequence has been the generation of new challenges associated with the problems of acquisition, compression, transmission, formation, and analysis of images. By their very nature, these challenges cut across the disciplines of physics, mathematics, engineering, programming and computer science, requiring the multidisciplinary knowledge that distinguishes the ING group.
The efforts of the researchers of this program have concentrated on increasingly refined numerical algorithms, combined with modern software engineering, while exploiting powerful and innovative computing resources. This team has realized and attained a historic objective at CRS4, namely the transference of expertise, with financial returns, from the world of basic research to industry.
