- Climate and meteorological data analysis and modelling applications
- Information Systems and modelling for inland and marine water management
- Modelling and geochemical data analysis for groundwater resources management
The main environmental problem addressed by this Activity is the contamination of soil and groundwater by point (e.g. oil spill, landfills, wastewater discharge etc.) and diffuse (e.g. saltwater intrusion, agricultural fertilizers, mineral extraction activities etc.) sources of contamination. The computational engine is the CODESA-3D hydrogeological model, jointly developed by CRS4 and the University of Padua, to simulate complex and large coupled density-dependent and variably-saturated three dimensional groundwater flow and contaminant transport problems. Major fields of application of the modelling services are the scientific and technical support to the planning and management of optimal aquifer development schemes and monitoring networks, and the selection of the most effective remediation scenarios.
