{"id":19776,"date":"2025-07-03T18:26:55","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T16:26:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/projects\/racos\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T12:39:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T10:39:30","slug":"racos","status":"publish","type":"projects","link":"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/projects\/racos\/","title":{"rendered":"RaCoS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The RaCoS  project will couple field investigation, theoretical research, and mathematical modeling in order to develop a comprehensive methodology for the study of nuclear waste contamination and remediation. Mathematical models that describe groundwater flow and reactive transport will be used to help predict the migration and fate of contaminants and to evaluate the effectiveness of pollutant containment and aquifer\/soil restoration measures. Existing numerical codes for the simulation of groundwater flow and transport will be elaborated and enhanced to include consideration of the specific chemical and physical processes relevant to the two sites, and to more general problems of radionuclide contamination of groundwater. The models will be integrated into an easy-to-use information management framework that will include the site data and other analysis tools such as geographic information systems. He holds a Laurea (M.Sc.) Degree in Chemical Engineering (1991) from the University of Padova (Italy) and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences (2003) from the Technical University of Delft (Holland). His research focused for 12 years (1993-2004) on computational hydrology and then on numerical methods for processing acoustic seismic data (2004-today). He has published in major journals and conferences and authored book chapters. He is a reviewer for several international journals (Transport in Porous Media, Hydrogeology Journal,  Vadose Zone Journal). He has taught in advanced courses on groundwater modeling and geostatistics at various universities and institutions. Since 10 years he works for hobby on financial modeling algorithms and on implementation of trading systems. On this topic he has published a book (2007) and a chapter in another book (published in July 2010 by Springer). She holds a Chemistry degree (1991) at the  University of Sassari, and a Ph.D degree (1996) in Physical Chemistry at the University of Siena. Prior to joining CRS4, she conducted research in the field of quantum chemistry, by using appropriate theory and mathematical tools to study vibronic structures of small molecules of environmental interest. This activity was conducted at the Departments of Chemistry  of the University of Pisa and  Wuppertal (Germany).  Her research interest at CRS4 included modeling and simulations to solve problems related to groundwater pollution (RaCoS project), solar desalination (Lebanon project), interaction of nuclear fission fragments with hydrogen in nuclear space engine (Rubbia's P242 project), multicomponent diffusion within zeolites for water cleaning (Eni), thermodiffusion and concentrating solar power systems, solar tower technologies (EU-STAGE STE).  She has papers in the major international refereed journals, as Int. J. of Heat and Mass Transfer, Solar Energy, J. Chem. Phys., J. Phys. Chem, Mol. Phys., Ind. Eng. Chem.
