The activity is part of the <strong data-start=\"329\" data-end=\"490\">SMAART project \u2013 Sustainability and Management for Precision Agriculture and Livestock Farming through Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and IoT Technologies<\/strong>, an initiative <strong data-start=\"506\" data-end=\"584\">co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"587\" data-end=\"800\">Last December, a first <strong data-start=\"610\" data-end=\"645\">preliminary field demonstration<\/strong> was carried out in an <strong data-start=\"668\" data-end=\"686\">artichoke crop<\/strong> made available by the project partner University of Sassari, which served as an initial testing environment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"802\" data-end=\"1222\">The SMAART project involves <strong data-start=\"830\" data-end=\"846\">Abinsula Srl<\/strong> (project coordinator), the <strong data-start=\"874\" data-end=\"942\">Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Sassari<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"944\" data-end=\"962\">Greenshare Srl<\/strong>, and the producers\u2019 organization <strong data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1011\">Sa Marigosa<\/strong>, which provides agricultural plots for field experimentation. Within the project, <strong data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"1102\">CRS4<\/strong> contributes its expertise in <strong data-start=\"1132\" data-end=\"1221\">robotics, advanced sensing, computer vision, 3D modelling and artificial intelligence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1224\" data-end=\"1661\">The robotic system is based on a <strong data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1296\">commercial outdoor robotic platform<\/strong>, which CRS4 has integrated and adapted to meet research requirements. In particular, the robot has been equipped with an <strong data-start=\"1418\" data-end=\"1453\">NVIDIA Jetson on-board computer<\/strong>, enabling the execution of artificial intelligence models directly on the platform. This allows real-time environmental perception, sensor data processing and autonomous navigation, even in dense vegetation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1663\" data-end=\"2113\">Alongside the computing unit, the system will be equipped with <strong data-start=\"1726\" data-end=\"1751\">off-the-shelf sensors<\/strong> selected for precision agriculture applications, including depth cameras, stereo cameras, <strong data-start=\"1842\" data-end=\"1862\">GNSS RTK systems<\/strong> for centimetre-level positioning and inertial sensors. Some devices require dedicated mounts, which are designed and manufactured by CRS4 using <strong data-start=\"2007\" data-end=\"2022\">3D printing<\/strong>, allowing rapid reconfiguration of the robot to support different experimental activities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2115\" data-end=\"2688\">The core of the research activity focuses on the development of <strong data-start=\"2179\" data-end=\"2231\">advanced on-board artificial intelligence models<\/strong>. These models will enable the robot to navigate autonomously within cultivated fields, recognising plant structures, fruits and other natural elements, while avoiding damage to valuable vegetation components such as fruits on the ground or parts of the canopy. In parallel, computer vision algorithms will be trained to detect and classify critical crop conditions, including diseases, water or nutrient stress, pest attacks, weeds and biometric anomalies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2690\" data-end=\"2941\">The data collected by the robot will be <strong data-start=\"2730\" data-end=\"2747\">georeferenced<\/strong> and made available to farmers, technicians and researchers, supporting targeted analyses and precision interventions, with the aim of improving sustainability and reducing environmental impact.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The CRS4 has launched the integration phase of a new tracked robotic platform aimed at developing advanced technologies for the intelligent monitoring of crops.
