One of the most delicate phases is the annotation of histological images, that is, the process by which pathologists highlight areas of tissue of particular clinical interest on a digital slide. Performing this task precisely and reproducibly is crucial, yet the tools available so far have shown significant limitations, such as poorly structured annotation approaches, difficulties in following rigorous protocols, and a lack of traceability of the steps involved\u2014leading to excessive variability and poor reusability of data.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1129\" data-end=\"1176\">The CRS4 Digital Pathology Platform (CDPP)<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1409\">To address these challenges, our researchers developed the <strong data-start=\"1236\" data-end=\"1278\">CRS4 Digital Pathology Platform (CDPP)<\/strong>, an <strong data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1298\">open-source<\/strong> system designed for research that makes the annotation process more structured, accurate, and collaborative.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1411\" data-end=\"1732\">Its main features include: <strong data-start=\"1438\" data-end=\"1453\">multi-label<\/strong> annotations that capture the morphological and clinical complexity of tissues; controlled but customizable review protocols; dedicated tools to increase precision, efficiency, and consistency of annotations; and integrated computational analysis with full provenance tracking.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1734\" data-end=\"2058\">This achievement is the latest milestone for the CRS4\u2019s <strong data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1829\">Visual and Data-Intensive Computing<\/strong> sector, which, through prototypes, clinical tests, and international collaborations, has long been pursuing an ambitious goal: to make digital pathology collaborative, reproducible, and integrated with new <strong data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2042\">AI<\/strong> technologies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2060\" data-end=\"2672\">The <strong data-start=\"2064\" data-end=\"2099\">CRS4 Digital Pathology Platform<\/strong> has already been successfully applied in several studies, demonstrating its ability to generate high-quality annotated datasets that can be reused in new research projects and used to develop AI tools for digital pathology. The platform and the different contexts in which it has been validated are described in the article <em data-start=\"2424\" data-end=\"2535\">\u201cAn open-source platform for structured annotation and computational workflows in digital pathology research\u201d<\/em> (<a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-13546-7\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"2537\" data-end=\"2617\">doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-13546-7<\/a>), recently published in <em data-start=\"2642\" data-end=\"2669\">Nature Scientific Reports<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2691\" data-end=\"2990\">The work is authored by CRS4 researchers <strong data-start=\"2732\" data-end=\"2788\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/people\/luca-lianas\/\">Luca Lianas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/people\/mauro-del-rio\/\">Mauro Del Rio<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/people\/luca-pireddu\/\">Luca Pireddu<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/people\/simone-leo\/\">Simone Leo<\/a><\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/people\/francesca-frexia\/\"><strong data-start=\"2794\" data-end=\"2814\">Francesca Frexia<\/strong><\/a>, together with clinicians, pathologists, and epidemiologists from the <strong data-start=\"2885\" data-end=\"2910\">University of Bologna<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"2916\" data-end=\"2954\">Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm<\/strong>, and the <strong data-start=\"2964\" data-end=\"2987\">University of Turin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3022\" data-end=\"3393\">The <strong data-start=\"3026\" data-end=\"3068\">CRS4 Digital Pathology Platform (CDPP)<\/strong> builds on years of experience within the group and brings together in a single tool the diverse needs of the scientific community: annotating digital slides with rigorous protocols, collaborating in distributed teams, integrating automated analysis workflows based on AI models, and ensuring complete traceability of data.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3395\" data-end=\"3647\"><strong data-start=\"3395\" data-end=\"3403\">CDPP<\/strong> is not just software, but a true collaborative research environment. It has already been successfully applied in large-scale clinical studies on prostate cancer and is now available to the scientific community as an <strong data-start=\"3620\" data-end=\"3635\">open-source<\/strong> platform.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3649\" data-end=\"3679\">Collaboration and support<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3680\" data-end=\"4353\">Such a result was made possible thanks to a rich network of collaborations and funding: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/projects\/xdata\/\"><strong data-start=\"3768\" data-end=\"3777\">XDATA<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/projects\/pam\/\"><strong data-start=\"3782\" data-end=\"3789\">PAM<\/strong><\/a> projects funded by the <strong data-start=\"3813\" data-end=\"3847\">Sardinian Regional Authorities<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/projects\/path\/\"><strong data-start=\"3849\" data-end=\"3857\">PATH<\/strong><\/a> funded by the <strong data-start=\"3872\" data-end=\"3937\">Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR)<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"3943\" data-end=\"3970\">Investigator Grant 2020<\/strong> from the <strong data-start=\"3980\" data-end=\"4019\">AIRC Foundation for Cancer Research<\/strong>, the European project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/projects\/deephealth\/\"><strong data-start=\"4042\" data-end=\"4056\">DeepHealth<\/strong><\/a> funded by the <strong data-start=\"4071\" data-end=\"4094\">European Commission<\/strong> under <strong data-start=\"4101\" data-end=\"4117\">Horizon 2020<\/strong>, the <strong data-start=\"4123\" data-end=\"4144\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/en\/projects\/h2ub\/\">Hybrid Hub<\/a> (H2UB)<\/strong> funded by the <strong data-start=\"4159\" data-end=\"4189\">Italian Ministry of Health<\/strong>, as well as contributions from Swedish organizations such as the <strong data-start=\"4255\" data-end=\"4281\">Swedish Cancer Society<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"4283\" data-end=\"4310\">Prostatacancerf\u00f6rbundet<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"4316\" data-end=\"4350\">Radiumhemmets Forskningsfonder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4355\" data-end=\"4373\">Looking ahead<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4374\" data-end=\"4754\">The publication in <em data-start=\"4393\" data-end=\"4413\">Scientific Reports<\/em> consolidates a research path that is already moving toward new milestones.
