The project aims at providing an environment for visualising and interacting with the anatomy and pathology demonstrated by advanced imaging methods and VR techniques. At the same time IERAPSI will allow rehearsal of procedures on an individual patient and the development of training systems based on individual patient's variations in anatomy and pathology. Today, planning of surgical procedures makes poor use of imaging data. In most cases surgeons simply study medical images from MRI, CT, etc. prior to surgery and construct an internal 3D model of anatomy in each individual case. Previous knowledge of normal anatomy is essential. Further the ability to rehearse the surgical procedure using patient specific data is extremely rare. IERAPSI will provide an interactive computerised environment for the planning and rehearsal of surgical procedures in individual patients. The most important goal is to contribute to the European Community's social objectives by improving the provision of health and life through the introduction of modern science technology into healthcare. Specifically, IERAPSI will provide: Image review and analysis tools to allow the surgical review of CT, MRI and angiographic examinations in an interactive 2D and 3D manner; an integrated suite of image segmentation and visualisation tools intended to allow rapid and accurate identification of individual structure based on their imaging characteristics; a physics based surgical simulation system with visual and haptic feedback for training surgeons to perform operations on individual patient data. To meet the project objectives IERAPSI will address surgery of the petrous bone - a common surgical site with complex anatomy. It requires a range of surgical procedures with escalating levels of complexity. CRS4 is the partner responsible for the study and development of the surgical simulation platform. The project has produced the following tangible results: a physically motivated burr-bone interaction model, loosely based on Hertz contact theory, that includes haptic forces evaluation, the bone erosion process and the resulting debris; adaptive techniques for real-time haptic and visual simulation of bone dissection, that exploit a multiresolution representation of the bone characteristic function to adaptively trade simulation quality with speed; a dynamic direct volume rendering technique based on OpenGL register combiners that is able to render shaded representations of dynamically changing rectilinear scalar volume in parallel to simulation threads; a running prototype of the bone dissection simulator. The system is based on patient-specific volumetric object models derived from 3D CT and MR imaging data. Real-time feedback is provided to the trainees via direct volume rendering and haptic feedback. The performance constraints dictated by the human perceptual system are met by exploiting parallelism via a decoupled simulation approach on a multi-processor PC platform. The end-user evaluation of the simulator was based on three groups of users characterized as: experts (Senior ENT Surgeons); with theoretical knowledge (residents); no previous experience. Complete session traces were acquired during the training sessions and have been later analyzed and compared. The system demonstrated realistic haptic and visual rendering, and the ability of simulating complete mastoidectomy procedures.
The project covers the development and coordination of the Digital Mont e Prama installation at EXPO 2015 in Milan. The fields of science, engineering, and technology are increasingly defined by data-driven approaches and need scalable solutions to make the most of the vast masses of information available. The study, development, and application of methods and technologies for processing, analyzing, exploring, and sharing massive and/or complex data are, therefore, at the heart of all strategic research plans, both at the European and National scales and for regional smart specialization.
CRS4 actively contributes to this field of research and has now achieved a leading role in the national landscape. The institutional project XDATA, funded by the contribution under art. 9 L.R. 20/2015, aims to consolidate and strengthen the center's activities in this strategic area and is divided into two parallel strands of activity:

The first stream, developed within the ViDiC sectore and leveraging synergies with initiatives at the national and international scale in the field of visual and data-intensive computing, focuses on scalable, and where possible shared and interoperable, enabling methods and technologies for acquiring, creating, processing, distributing and exploring complex and/or massive datasets from simulations or measurements of real phenomena, objects, environments or processes. In particular, we will target our interest on: distributed computing, automation and machine learning solutions to improve the scalability of all processes; adaptive and intelligent visual computing methods for both the processing and understanding of geometric and visual data and their presentation; and management and sharing solutions based on data and process modeling using open formalisms, with a specific focus on the traceability and reproducibility of each process step. These general solutions will then be applied in vertical solutions in application areas that will include digital medicine, cultural heritage, and, more generally, digital science, engineering, and society.

The second strand, on the other hand, is developed within the Digital Technologies sectore, and focuses on the remote sensing supply chain, where the need emerges for a systematic structuring of processes for managing information flows, whether derived from satellite observation, aerial sensing, or ground-based networks, and the establishment of a persistent information base of aggregation of the time series of interest, functional for feeding models in the domains of interest and for multi-scenario representation of geographic output. The development of data fusion methodologies in the different spectral ranges, in line with the activities of ongoing projects, also requires the study of operational-type processing methodologies, especially where real-time requirements may be relevant. Application areas will mainly address the issues of resource access and environmental sustainability.

Included in the project are specific activities targeting: research, development, and technology transfer; pilot studies; maintenance of dedicated research and development infrastructure; scientific dissemination; standardization activities; and other activities aimed at achieving greater integration with the scientific community and public and private entities.
EXCALIBUR will studies, develops, and evaluates a holistic framework that offers innovative tools and methods for enhanced study, improved conservation and restoration works, and knowledge of cultural heritage objects, based on their digital twins.
EXCALIBUR focuses on solutions that assist the study, conservation, and restoration of burial excavations, remains, and findings at the level of (a) burial sites, excavations, and surroundings, (b) tomb structures and burial decorations, (c) artefacts, burial findings, traditions and ceremonies, and (d) human and burial remain. The practical outcome will consist in (a) a protocol for quickly acquiring detailed surface representations using a single camera and freely moving lights; (b) intelligent methods and tools for automatically characterising viewing and illumination conditions, without needing specialised setups and/or calibration targets such as glossy spheres or radiometric targets; and (c) intelligent methods and tools for creating reliable surface representations with minimum user intervention.
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
