It aims at favoring the set up of a sustainable agricultural production frame, addressing vulnerable communities living in semi-arid and arid areas in the Mediterranean. The project objective is to combat soil impoverishment and to reduce the use of water, fertilizers,
and pesticides by means of microbiome potential to stabilize soil and promote plant growth under adverse conditions.
This project addresses local communities distributed over 6 different areas of the Mediterranean (Italy, Jordania, Cyprus, Greece, Tunisia, and Algeria) that have been increasingly challenged by water scarcity and by low agricultural productivity due to the scarce bio-geochemical functions of soils. Stakeholders have underlined that a change in soil management (e.g. in the direction of organic agriculture) needs to take place to ensure sustainability. Different soils and crops (tomatoes, sunflowers, onions, legumes such as faba beans and vetch, barely, wheat or high biomass leading grasses like sorghum, health crops and cereals as konjac, orchidaceae, amaranth and quinoa) will be considered in the test sites.
The project’s scope will be achieved through integration of state-of-the-art biotechnologies and leading edge characterization, monitoring and modeling tools, accessed through an innovative, interactive web-based observation system.
The outreach strategy of SUPREME is to create a co-production frame between researchers, farmers and policy makers, which aims at bridging the gap between research, real needs and policy aims.
The TESTARE project is intended to address the problem of how to combine the exploitation of resources and the protection of the environment. To design and implement an operational decision support system for the management of water resources that is based on hydrologic modelling, multi-disciplinary indicators and a multicriteria evaluation procedure. 2. To test the system in representative case studies in co-operation with local water management administrations. 3. To demonstrate the potential of the tool in supporting the sustainable management of water resources in Europe. The final result is a tool, the MULINO DSS software "mDSS", that has been developed as a stand-alone software, and an overall methodology within which the tool can be applied for an integrated approach to decision problems related to water management. The software incorporates integrated analysis modelling (IAM), multi-criteria analysis (MCA) and the European Environment Agency's DPSIR framework, adopting state-of-the-art data formats to guarantee interoperability. The system does not require additional software, which should improve the potential for its utilisation by water management administrations. Optional links with GIS software, hydrological models and/or meta-models are provided, and in the last version of the software a full coupling procedure links mDSS3 with the CRASH hydrologic model. The software can be coupled also with any hydrological model which respects a standard input/output procedure. The MULINO website and CDRom containing the software and all of its support materials are available for free distribution.
The project will develop numerical models and GIS applications to simulate and analyse pollution problems in groundwaters with application to a Sardinian case-study (Oristano coastal aquifer).
Project activities were aimed to the development and application of models for water resource management at regional scale and basin scale. The fields of science, engineering, and technology are increasingly defined by data-driven approaches and need scalable solutions to make the most of the vast masses of information available. The study, development, and application of methods and technologies for processing, analyzing, exploring, and sharing massive and/or complex data are, therefore, at the heart of all strategic research plans, both at the European and National scales and for regional smart specialization.
CRS4 actively contributes to this field of research and has now achieved a leading role in the national landscape. The institutional project XDATA, funded by the contribution under art. 9 L.R. 20/2015, aims to consolidate and strengthen the center's activities in this strategic area and is divided into two parallel strands of activity:

The first stream, developed within the ViDiC sectore and leveraging synergies with initiatives at the national and international scale in the field of visual and data-intensive computing, focuses on scalable, and where possible shared and interoperable, enabling methods and technologies for acquiring, creating, processing, distributing and exploring complex and/or massive datasets from simulations or measurements of real phenomena, objects, environments or processes. In particular, we will target our interest on: distributed computing, automation and machine learning solutions to improve the scalability of all processes; adaptive and intelligent visual computing methods for both the processing and understanding of geometric and visual data and their presentation; and management and sharing solutions based on data and process modeling using open formalisms, with a specific focus on the traceability and reproducibility of each process step. These general solutions will then be applied in vertical solutions in application areas that will include digital medicine, cultural heritage, and, more generally, digital science, engineering, and society.

The second strand, on the other hand, is developed within the Digital Technologies sectore, and focuses on the remote sensing supply chain, where the need emerges for a systematic structuring of processes for managing information flows, whether derived from satellite observation, aerial sensing, or ground-based networks, and the establishment of a persistent information base of aggregation of the time series of interest, functional for feeding models in the domains of interest and for multi-scenario representation of geographic output. The development of data fusion methodologies in the different spectral ranges, in line with the activities of ongoing projects, also requires the study of operational-type processing methodologies, especially where real-time requirements may be relevant. Application areas will mainly address the issues of resource access and environmental sustainability.

Included in the project are specific activities targeting: research, development, and technology transfer; pilot studies; maintenance of dedicated research and development infrastructure; scientific dissemination; standardization activities; and other activities aimed at achieving greater integration with the scientific community and public and private entities.

Pierluigi Cau - CRS4

<meta property="og:description" content="Pierluigi Cau holds a Laurea (M.Sc.) degree in Hydraulic Engineering from the University of Cagliari and works at CRS4 as a reasercher in the Environmental Sciences program of the Energy and Environment sector since 2000.
