The directions of the experimentation underlying the proposal are the innovative communication tools Information and Communications Technology (ICT) designed to facilitate the dissemination of automatic interpretation services of Italian sign language (LIS) and automatic notification modes, also supported by wearable devices on modern smartphones.\n\u00a0\nThe overall aim of the project is to complete the path already started for effective use of automatic LIS recognition in reducing communication barriers between PA service personnel and deaf people aimed at improving accessibility to public services.   The technologies and activities listed below will form the basic framework on which to develop digital services (in the cloud): 1. improvement of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) computational performance in automatic LIS recognition; 2. significant extension of the number of LIS signs recognized by the digital system; 3. realization and configuration of a WEB client-server video streaming platform; 4. development of a virtual assistant (avatar) capable of interpreting LIS vocabulary phrases made available to the LIS automatic recognition system.\n\u00a0\nThe project includes specific and ongoing internal and external communication and dissemination of results with the involvement of stakeholders in the area.","post_title":"IPOACUSIA 2","post_excerpt":"","post_status":"publish","comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","post_password":"","post_name":"ipoacusia-2","to_ping":"","pinged":"","post_modified":"2026-04-02 12:32:33","post_modified_gmt":"2026-04-02 10:32:33","post_content_filtered":"","post_parent":0,"guid":"https:\/\/www.crs4.it\/projects\/ipoacusia-2\/","menu_order":0,"post_type":"projects","post_mime_type":"","comment_count":"0","filter":"raw"},{"ID":14983,"post_author":"4","post_date":"2025-07-03 18:19:50","post_date_gmt":"2025-07-03 16:19:50","post_content":"The IPOACUSIA project aims to study and develop methods and technologies for the dissemination of Italian sign language interpreting and remote video interpreting services as well as the use of any other technology aimed at breaking down barriers to communication. The first objective is to develop a prototype network (cloud) application on which to carry out experimentation with appropriate text-to-speech and speech-to-text paradigms designed to improve communication between able-bodied people and people with hearing loss. A second goal is to develop a prototype cloud application capable of handling LIS-to-text services. One of the critical issues being addressed stems from the need to take advantage of significant computing resources for real-time management of machine learning models. In this area, the best high-performance computing architectures present at CRS4 will be tested as well as state-of-the-art options present on the cloud services market (e.g., Amazon, Google, IBM, Microsoft) will be evaluated. The operational objective of the project aims at the timely management of the various stages of the operational pipeline leading from the acquisition of the sequence of video images, to their image processing, to their simplification into a computational model useful for the automatic understanding of the gesture itself in a format suitable to be interpreted by appropriate artificial neural networks in text format. \u00a0It is planned to update services developed on the basis of user feedback (LivingLab). In particular, we are developing a system that will be able to process and visualize 3D medical data, reconstruct the geometry of arteries of specific patients and to simulate blood flow in them. The initial applications of the system will be for clinical research and training purposes. In a later stage we will explore the application of the system to surgical planning.
