Uni-material models will be spatiotemporally simulated, based on environmental
phenomena modeling, so as to collectively render imminent degradation effects on the multi-material CHOs, enabling prediction and recreation of their future appearance, as well as automatic restoration, reaching even back to their original shape. Scan4Reco will further facilitate conservation, by indicating spots/segments of cultural objects that are in eminent conservation need and require special care, while suggestions will be provided by a dedicated Decision Support System (DSS), over conservation methods that should be followed.
All the above will be validated on real case scenarios involving heterogeneous objects of various sizes and materials, in 2 pilot real-world use cases. To enhance the accessibility of the digitized cultural objects to the scientific community, field experts and the general public, a virtual model of a museum will be launched.
The concentration of government buildings within urban environments has become a source of serious security vulnerability. Administrators and security experts face a variety of evolving threats that are hard to anticipate. To secure a government building against multiple threats while maintaining a minimal level of transparency and accessibility requires an integral security approach. It demands interdisciplinary collaboration between different experts from different domains. Currently, there is no efficient method or tool that allows the experts of different stripes to efficiently design, evaluate and implement appropriate security concepts. Existing ones do not allow for the effective creation, analysis, assessment, and sharing of security concepts that will help government administrators provide a secure environment for personnel and citizens. The VASCO project addresses two important objectives. First, it will design, implement and evaluate an innovative IT tool that will enable security professionals and administrators to jointly formulate, test, and adjust security concepts and measures in a virtual environment. This provides a cost-effective and risk- free environment in which to devise an evidence-based, all-risk approach for the protection of government buildings. Second, it will produce a knowledge and best practice database, which captures dynamic and visual reference scenarios created with the VASCO system. To accomplish these aims, the project will adopt an iterative methodology that enables the constant involvement of its world-class security and crisis management experts, assisted by a solid and open user group, during the whole project. It makes use of the latest advances in interactive visualisation, simulation, crisis management, and artificial intelligence to provide end-users with an unprecedented tool that dramatically improves the way in which they collaborate to secure critical government assets both at home and abroad. CRS4, together with ISTI-CNR, will concentrate on techniques for acquisition and exploration of indoor environments.
The project aims at developing specialized techniques for streaming, rendering, and color-mapping massive point clouds. The fields of science, engineering, and technology are increasingly defined by data-driven approaches and need scalable solutions to make the most of the vast masses of information available. The study, development, and application of methods and technologies for processing, analyzing, exploring, and sharing massive and/or complex data are, therefore, at the heart of all strategic research plans, both at the European and National scales and for regional smart specialization.
CRS4 actively contributes to this field of research and has now achieved a leading role in the national landscape. The institutional project XDATA, funded by the contribution under art. 9 L.R. 20/2015, aims to consolidate and strengthen the center's activities in this strategic area and is divided into two parallel strands of activity:

The first stream, developed within the ViDiC sectore and leveraging synergies with initiatives at the national and international scale in the field of visual and data-intensive computing, focuses on scalable, and where possible shared and interoperable, enabling methods and technologies for acquiring, creating, processing, distributing and exploring complex and/or massive datasets from simulations or measurements of real phenomena, objects, environments or processes. In particular, we will target our interest on: distributed computing, automation and machine learning solutions to improve the scalability of all processes; adaptive and intelligent visual computing methods for both the processing and understanding of geometric and visual data and their presentation; and management and sharing solutions based on data and process modeling using open formalisms, with a specific focus on the traceability and reproducibility of each process step. These general solutions will then be applied in vertical solutions in application areas that will include digital medicine, cultural heritage, and, more generally, digital science, engineering, and society.

The second strand, on the other hand, is developed within the Digital Technologies sectore, and focuses on the remote sensing supply chain, where the need emerges for a systematic structuring of processes for managing information flows, whether derived from satellite observation, aerial sensing, or ground-based networks, and the establishment of a persistent information base of aggregation of the time series of interest, functional for feeding models in the domains of interest and for multi-scenario representation of geographic output. The development of data fusion methodologies in the different spectral ranges, in line with the activities of ongoing projects, also requires the study of operational-type processing methodologies, especially where real-time requirements may be relevant. Application areas will mainly address the issues of resource access and environmental sustainability.

Included in the project are specific activities targeting: research, development, and technology transfer; pilot studies; maintenance of dedicated research and development infrastructure; scientific dissemination; standardization activities; and other activities aimed at achieving greater integration with the scientific community and public and private entities.

Ruggero Pintus - CRS4

<meta property="og:description" content="Ruggero Pintus studied Electronic Engineering at the University of Cagliari in Italy, where he received his master’s degree in April 2003.
