Today, we are in the middle of the Information Society era. Smart phones and other advanced mobile devices, are continuously changing the society we live in. Accessing the Internet through high speed connection from home, work or basically from anywhere, such devices bring together computer science and telecommunications technologies that once were two separate worlds. It is now possible to communicate anywhere and anytime through a variety of connections and Apps, based on open standards and with ever growing interoperability.
While the Internet reaches almost 3 billion people, it is foreseen that Internet of Things (IoT) will soon reach 30 billion devices, most of which characterized by their very small size, low cost (a few tenth of dollars or even less) and reduced energy consumption.
The convergence of ubiquity, miniaturization, energy efficiency and low cost will most probably be the explosive mix that will kick-start the economy based on IoT revolution, taking it from the early stage to the acceleration phase, following the typical S-shaped curve of innovation life cycle.
Since its creation, CRS4 ICT-Information Society sector has always developed innovative applications. Our transversal competences allow us to space over different areas, covering the needs of both professional users and consumers.
We will continue to implement the strategy to promote activities and projects that link CRS4 research activity to the development of a real innovation in Sardinia. The objective is that some of the innovative prototypes developed by CRS4 are adopted by local companies, after going through production engineering and integration, and possibly catalyzing the birth of start-ups. For years, we have been collaborating with local and international companies for industrial research activities and technology transfer. In the following years we will further strengthen such activities, especially in the fields of transport, culture, territory, food and tourism.
