This need arises from the great variability of the solar resource and the high economic cost that its storage involves.
The forecast of solar and wind energy production and energy consumption, has now become an integral part of the concept of "smart grid", and is an enabling technology that can allow a greater diffusion of renewable energies and lower ancillary costs related to their variability.
To date, there aren't any technique that may be considered totally reliable and effective for this type of forecast, because of the extreme complexity of the problem.
This research and development activity requires the aggregation of several knowledge areas, in particular the physics of the atmosphere, the physical-mathematical modeling and machine learning.
Several project in this line of research have been funded by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and by the European Union.
