CFD modeling of the ENEA CIRCE ICE experiment, a speech of Stefano Lampis

Stefano Lampis, newly graduated in Mechanical engineering the Politecnico di Torino, will hold a seminar on 30 november 2018 at CRS4 (building 1, Science and Technology park of Sardinia, Pula). Stefano will present his thesis work performed during his internship at CRS4, when he studied and performed the numerical CFD modeling of the ICE experiment conducted in the CIRCE (Circulation Eutectic) facility, located at the ENEA research center of Brasimone (Bologna, Italy). The facility is a large thermal loop operated with liquid Lead-Bismuth Eutectic and is an key component for the development of the next generation of nuclear plants. Such experiment plays a pivotal role in the research process involving the use of HLM (heavy liquid metals) as coolants in the primary circuit of the future 4th generation LFR reactors. The study describes the generation process of a "modular" CFD model of the CIRCE ICE experiment, with the main aim to investigate and appropriately simulate the fluid-dynamic behaviour of molten lead-bismuth eutectic under the typical circumstances required by a modern LFR reactor. The conclusions of the research highlight the relevance of the present CFD model and its current and future applications.
