New patterns for ubiquitous computing The NDA Area is involved in the definition of new patterns and architectures for the design and development of ubiquitous applications. Such applications belong to the environment where they can be discovered and used while devices are merely considered “accessors” to such empowered surroundings and are no longer repositories for data and programs. In order to pursue our objectives, we decompose the problem in two main sub-problems: on one hand, the definition of a model for ubiquitous applications and the infrastructure needed to support and deploy such a model; on the other hand, the design methodology and the infrastructure that supports the universal access to applications through heterogeneous channels and various modalities of interaction. With respect to the ubiquitous computing requirements, application might be composed into a number of elements: business logic, home directory, links to other services, sessions, agents, and user interfaces. Due to the fact that the context of execution is known only at runtime and that it is even time-variant, the distribution of such elements must be adaptive and elements should move from a network node to another in order to find the optimal distribution in a given context. Such requirements entail the adoption of distributed systems technologies such as Jini, WebServices, and Peer-to-Peer for discovering, connecting, and accessing to online contents and services. The mobility of users implies that services and information systems should be visible from a number of different channels: from a web page, from a WAP site or from an Interactive Voice Responder (IVR) machine. With respect to these implications, a service supporting mobility of users should be designed in a way such that the following principle will stand: design once, run anywhere. Such research themes have been largely explored in the e-mate, EurEauWeb and VICKIE projects, providing innovative solutions for runtime device adaptation and for discontinue wireless access.

The main goal of the Network Distributed Applications (NDA) area is the study, the research and the experimentation of new technologies in the field of the Internet/WWW applications. The research activity of the area, is aimed at designing and developing software systems, platform independent, based on network-centric paradigm, distributed object technologies and service-oriented architectures and built on open and “de-facto” standards.
