Position: Director
Role: Program Head
Ernesto Bonomi is director of three highly-motivated groups: Imaging and Numerical Geophysics, Environmental Sciences, and Process Engineering and Combustion. These groups are composed of about 25 research staff, developing and applying numerical simulation models and data analysis tools for earth exploration and imaging, hydrology and territorial planning, meteorology, and chemical and combustion processes. Ernesto Bonomi is responsible for all research and development functions, including scientific leadership, project planning, marketing, fund raising, proposals, budget and recruitment. He has a successful history of obtaining and maintaining sponsorship for research and development, in particular for more than 15 years with the oil industry. Publications have been restricted by contract. Ernesto Bonomi leads an R&D team (Imaging and Numerical Geophysics) providing innovative industrial software for seismic exploration based on efficient parallel algorithms and high-performance implementations of very-large-scale 3D imaging tools; many of these are now used routinely in production. He also widened the scope of the Program with participation in projects partly funded by the Sardinian Regional Authority, the Italian Research Ministry or the European Commission. He has shifted the R&D activity toward the development of WEB services, providing knowledge-based models, a problem solving environment, and collaborative computing tools to decision makers in the fields of energy and environmental management, land planning and development. Ernesto Bonomi graduated in 1977 as an Engineer in Physics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland. In 1980, he completed the Advanced Master's degree in Physics (Doctorat de 3-ème Cycle) at the University of Orléans, France. In 1985 he was awarded a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics (Doctorat ès Science Physique) at the Ecole Polytechnique and University of Paris XI, France. He has more than seventy publications, including articles, proceedings, reports and proposals.
