Activities of the Area

The area activity is linked to an "intelligent" use of fuel aimed at minimising both financial costs and environmental impact. For preservation and efficient use of the planet resources, two aspects in particular will be investigated:

the overall efficiency the combustion process;

the control of pollutant emissions.

The area mission is to pursue research and development initiatives in the following fields:

modelling of combustion with paticular emphasis on pollutant production aspects;

development of advanced physico-chemical models for pollutant control in combustion apparatus;

implementation of models in existing softwares, commercial and  not;

application of models to solve problems of industrial or environmental nature (gas turbine, internal combustion engine and incinerator with low pollutant emissions).

The area strength results from integration of two specific competences:

Modelling capability. Capacity of modelling combustion phenomenology in its various aspects according to the specific application, with particular emphasis to pollutant production.

Technical operativity. An extensive knowledge and technical operativity in the use and exploitation of commercial CFD software capability, such that new combustion models incorporation.
